In a continuing effort toward creating a collaborative culture, please find a summary of the Scott County Board of Education meeting on January 21, 2016. The Scott County Board of Education met on January 21, 2016 at 6:30pm at the Great Crossing Office Complex. At the meeting, members approved fundraisers for the Scott County High School Boys Basketball Team Three Point Club. Upon a second reading, the board approved revisions to the attendance policy which increases the number of days parents have to submit a written excuse for an absence from three to five. Click here to view a working copy the attendance policy (09.123) with revisions highlighted. The board conducted first readings of three additional policy revisions at the meeting.
Other discussion included next steps for hiring a board attorney. Superintendent Putty provided data from other districts and board members and attorney Grant Chenoweth outlined characteristics for this position which include experience and knowledge of school law, civil rights, human resources, and special education. Each board member will develop a specific list of criteria for continued discussion in March.
In other business, the board agreed to provide $500 to complete the library at Scott County Preschool Center. The library project started through the leadership of students in the Scott County High School DECA club and was supported by programs like Helping through Him as well as a community book drive.
Next members created a paid middle school archery coaching position to serve all three middle schools. The archery program is growing with almost 100 students currently participating. Members also discussed window replacement at Garth Elementary School as well as the importance of historical preservation of this community landmark. Director of Maintenance Dwayne Ellison agreed with the need for windows at Garth as well as Scott County Ninth Grade School and Scott County Middle School.
The next meeting of the Scott County Board of Education will take place on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at 6:30pm at the Great Crossing Office Complex.
